What are the easiest houseplants?

Need a good starter plant? Want the basic 'crazy plant lady' starter pack? Here are five of the easiest (and cheapest) houseplants.

cacti

  1. Mint and Lemon Balm- These herbs are super easy to start and will be just fine with neglect or over watering. They can grow in any container, and mint can be a natural deterrent to ants, mosquitoes, and flies. These will look like they are over rooting the pot, but they will be fine.
  2. Ivy- There are many varieties to choose from. English, Swedish, Grape and Algerian Ivy may be the more known. Ivy enjoys indirect light and grows pretty quick. I keep my Algerian in my bathroom window (its frosted) and it is super happy there.
  3. Succulents and Aloe- These plants are the best 'set it and forget it'. They don't want to be watered or attended to. While some have caused me to question my green thumb; Aloe, monkey tail cacti and mother of thousands are three of my favorites to recommend. Aloe and MOT will grow out of their pots quick, but the monkey tail will take some time.
  4. Spider Plant- I vowed to never own this plant. It reproduces like a rabbit. Plus, I assumed every home had one. Now there is one hanging from my back door. (Equivalent to he said no chickens, and now we have 40...) Keep the soil moist and repot every few years.
  5. Pothos- Just like Ivy, Pothos has dozens of varieties. The ones I would recommend starting with are Golden Pothos and Marble Pothos. For a fun one, try the Skeleton Key pothos. These can be grown to climb a wall, a moss pole, or let them hang. No need to repot for a long time.
